Ryan began his LEO career with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. He worked for five years assigned to patrol and the Intel Unit and is certified as a Defensive Tactics Instructor, Handgun Instructor, Rifle Instructor, and LVNR Instructor. Ryan left the LVMPD for the Salt Lake Police Department in 2009, where he continues to serve until the present.
At SLPD, Ryan has worked in patrol, the Gang Unit, the Training Unit, and since 2011 he has served on SWAT. Ryan is a POST-DTI, a Handgun Instructor, and a SWAT Sub Gun Instructor. Since 2010 Ryan has taken an active role in teaching DTs to the department as a whole and teaching recruits. Ryan helped establish the current department DT curriculum using C4C PJJ Fundamentals and Principles.
During his over a decade of SWAT service, Ryan has served as an assaulter, explosive breacher, and the explosive breacher team leader.
Ryan started training in Mixed Martial Arts in 2008. That same year he began training in C4C directly under Chad Lyman. Ryan has continued to train and has trained with the PIT Wasatch, the Wasatch Combat Academy, at Unified BJJ. Ryan has boxed as an amateur and trained consistently in MMA and BJJ.
Ryan has trained for years in C4C PJJ, and he was certified as an adjunct Instructor in 2020. Ryan has extensive LEO, MMA/BJJ, and C4C PJJ experience in training and application. Ryan is also a long-time coach who combines consistent training and application as an LEO with regular coaching.
